A massive gas explosion destroyed an apartment building in the Oak Cliff/Bishop Arts area of Dallas on Thursday, May 28, 2026, injuring at least four people and prompting a large Dallas Fire-Rescue response. According to NBC 5, firefighters were called shortly before 1 p.m. to a residential building in the 400 block of East 9th Street, near North Patton Avenue. The fire was initially reported as a three-alarm fire before being upgraded to a five-alarm response. NBC 5 reported that a contractor was working at the building and struck a gas line, leading to the explosion. The two-story apartment building appeared to be completely destroyed, debris landed on a nearby home, and flames spread to at least one nearby vehicle. Officials said nearly 100 firefighters responded, including Dallas Fire-Rescue’s Urban Search and Rescue team. Apartment explosions and gas line incidents require a thorough investigation. A Texas injury lawyer can review whether utility lines were properly marked, whether contractors followed safe excavation or construction procedures, whether residents received proper warnings, whether gas systems were maintained, and whether property owners, contractors, utility companies, or other parties may be legally responsible. Evidence can disappear quickly after a gas explosion. Utility records, contractor work orders, 811 locate records, permits, inspection reports, gas line maintenance records, surveillance footage, fire investigation findings, witness statements, 911 calls, medical records, and property damage evidence may all be critical to determining what happened and who may be responsible. If you or your loved one was injured in a Dallas apartment explosion, Bishop Arts gas leak, Oak Cliff fire, or Texas premises liability case involving a contractor or utility hazard, you may have the right to seek justice and pursue compensation for medical expenses, burn injuries, smoke inhalation, lost wages, displacement costs, property damage, pain and suffering, and other damages. Dallas ICE Custody Death: Family Seeks Answers
The family of Mohammad Nazeer Paktiawal is demanding answers after his death in ICE custody in Dallas was ruled accidental, according to CBS Texas. Paktiawal was a 41-year-old Afghan father and former U.S. military ally. CBS reported that he died in March, less than 24 hours after being detained. A death certificate provided by his family states that he suffered an allergic reaction to an unidentified substance, which caused anaphylaxis and triggered his asthma. CBS reported that the death certificate also lists toxic effects of methamphetamine, heart disease, and cigarette smoking as contributing factors. Paktiawal’s family disputes parts of those findings and is calling for the release of the autopsy report. According to CBS, Dallas County is withholding the autopsy report at ICE’s request because officials say releasing it could interfere with an ongoing criminal investigation. ICE previously stated that Paktiawal was hospitalized after experiencing shortness of breath and chest pain in a holding room and later died at Parkland Hospital. This is a heartbreaking loss for Paktiawal’s family, including his children. A death in government custody must be investigated with compassion and care, but also with transparency and urgency. Families deserve answers about what happened, what symptoms were reported, what medical care was provided, what substances or allergens may have been involved, and whether the death could have been prevented. Critical evidence may include detention records, intake screening forms, medical records, medication records, allergy history, surveillance video, body camera footage, incident reports, EMS records, hospital records, autopsy findings, toxicology results, staff communications, and witness statements from inside the detention facility. If your loved one died in ICE custody, jail custody, detention facility custody, or after being denied proper medical care in Texas, you may have the right to seek justice and pursue compensation for funeral expenses, medical expenses, mental anguish, loss of companionship, pain and suffering, and other damages. Fire Causes Roof Collapse at Mesquite Apartment Complex
A fire at a Mesquite apartment complex caused part of the roof to collapse Wednesday afternoon, according to NBC DFW. The fire happened at the Westover on 80 apartment complex in Mesquite. The Mesquite Fire Department responded around 12:20 p.m. after reports of a fire. A fire official said the one-alarm fire started in the attic and spread through the roof, causing part of the roof to collapse. Nine apartment units were damaged or destroyed. No injuries were reported, but several residents were displaced. The American Red Cross is helping affected residents, and the cause of the fire remains under investigation. Apartment fires can leave families suddenly without a safe place to live, clothing, furniture, personal belongings, medications, documents, and other necessities. Even when no injuries are reported, residents may still face smoke exposure, emotional distress, property loss, temporary housing expenses, and questions about whether the fire could have been prevented. A Mesquite apartment fire should be investigated carefully. Key questions may include whether the fire involved electrical issues, attic wiring, maintenance problems, building code violations, defective smoke alarms, delayed repairs, unsafe conditions, or failures by property owners or managers to protect residents. Critical evidence may include the fire investigation report, maintenance records, tenant complaints, inspection records, smoke alarm records, electrical records, photographs, surveillance video, witness statements, lease documents, prior repair requests, and communications with apartment management. Wooley Law Firm handles serious apartment fire, smoke injury, burn injury, roof collapse, premises liability, negligent maintenance, and property damage cases across Mesquite, Dallas-Fort Worth, and throughout Texas.
