A 13-year-old boy was killed and another child was seriously injured in a four-vehicle crash in Ward County Wednesday evening, according to the Texas Department of Public Safety.
The collision happened at approximately 7:40 p.m. on August 12, 2026, at the intersection of FM 1776 and FM 1219.
According to DPS's preliminary investigation, a 2017 Ford F-350 was traveling south on FM 1219 toward the intersection while a 2013 Volkswagen Passat was traveling east on FM 1776. A 2015 International Harvester towing a 2012 International Harvester was traveling west on FM 1776 and attempting to turn left.
DPS said the driver of the F-350 failed to yield the right-of-way and entered the intersection, colliding with the Volkswagen. The impact then propelled the Volkswagen into the 2015 International.
A 13-year-old passenger in the Volkswagen was pronounced dead at the scene. His name was not released because he was a minor. A second boy from Coyanosa suffered serious injuries and was transported to UMC Lubbock for treatment. The crash remains under investigation.
Failure-to-Yield Crashes Can Trigger Multi-Vehicle Collisions
A failure to yield at a rural highway intersection can create a chain-reaction crash involving several vehicles.
Here, DPS's preliminary account places the first collision between the F-350 and Volkswagen. The Volkswagen was then reportedly pushed into the International truck.
A complete investigation may need to determine:
The position and speed of each vehicle
Which traffic-control devices governed the intersection
Sight distance for each driver
Whether the F-350 stopped or slowed before entering FM 1776
Whether any driver attempted evasive action
The timing of the International truck's left turn
Vehicle event data and braking information
Dashcam or surveillance footage
Witness statements
Roadway markings and lighting conditions
Because several vehicles became involved within seconds, investigators should reconstruct the entire sequence rather than evaluating only the final impact.
The Commercial Truck's Involvement Does Not Establish Trucking-Company Fault
One of the vehicles involved was an International Harvester towing another International vehicle, but DPS's preliminary account does not identify that truck as causing the first collision.
That distinction matters.
The commercial vehicle still needs to be documented as part of the reconstruction, including its position, speed, turning movement, braking, and available electronic information. However, its involvement alone does not establish negligence by the truck driver or motor carrier.
The Wooley Law Firm handles serious 18-wheeler and commercial-truck accident cases throughout Texas, including crashes where several vehicles and potentially multiple insurance policies are involved.
Serious Injuries to Children Can Create Long-Term Claims
One child died and another suffered serious injuries in this collision.
When a child survives a catastrophic crash, the long-term effects may extend well beyond the initial hospitalization. Depending on the injuries, a claim may involve future medical treatment, rehabilitation, impairment, pain, disfigurement, and the impact of the injuries over the child's lifetime.
Claims involving minors may also require special procedures for resolving or protecting settlement proceeds.
Wrongful Death After a Fatal Ward County Crash
The death of a 13-year-old child is an unimaginable loss for a family.
If the evidence ultimately establishes that another driver's negligence caused or contributed to the child's death, certain surviving family members may have rights under Texas wrongful-death law.
The Wooley Law Firm represents families in Texas wrongful death cases involving fatal car, pickup, and commercial-vehicle collisions.
Potential damages depend on the particular facts and relationships involved and should be evaluated individually.
Evidence Should Be Preserved After a Four-Vehicle Crash
In a collision involving four vehicles and multiple impacts, important evidence may be spread among several drivers, insurers, law-enforcement agencies, and vehicle owners.
Potential evidence includes:
Event data recorder information
Commercial-vehicle electronic data
GPS and telematics records
Crash-scene photographs
Vehicle inspections
Witness statements
Dashcam footage
Cell-phone records when legally relevant
Police measurements and diagrams
Medical and EMS records
Preserving this evidence can help determine exactly how the first collision occurred and whether any later action contributed to the resulting injuries.
Ward County has also experienced other serious multi-vehicle crashes this year, including a June collision on FM 3398 that killed two people and injured two others, according to DPS reporting.
