Most Popular Auto Insurance Companies in Dallas-Fort Worth

Most Popular Auto Insurance Companies in Dallas-Fort Worth

If you drive in Dallas–Fort Worth, there is a good chance that you, the driver who hit you, or both are insured by one of a relatively small group of major auto insurance companies.

Progressive, State Farm, Allstate, GEICO, Farmers, USAA, Texas Farm Bureau, and several Texas county mutual insurance companies write a significant amount of auto insurance across the state. That matters after a Dallas or Fort Worth car wreck because the insurance company involved can affect how the claim is investigated, what information is requested, and how coverage issues are handled.

According to the Texas Department of Insurance, Progressive County Mutual Insurance Company was the largest individual personal-auto insurer in Texas based on 2024 premiums, followed by State Farm Mutual Automobile Insurance Company and Allstate Fire and Casualty Insurance Company. Multiple GEICO and USAA entities also appear near the top of the statewide rankings.

There is not a comparable public TDI ranking limited specifically to Dallas–Fort Worth, so statewide Texas market share is a useful benchmark for identifying the insurance companies DFW drivers are most likely to encounter.

If you were injured in a wreck and are dealing with one of these insurance companies, remember something important: the size or popularity of the insurance company does not determine what your injury claim is worth.

Your claim should be evaluated based on the crash, your injuries, your medical treatment, lost income, available insurance coverage, and the other damages you can prove.

The Largest Auto Insurance Companies Texas Drivers Commonly Encounter

The Texas Department of Insurance's most recent published market-share information is based on 2024 personal-auto premiums. TDI lists the following companies among the largest individual auto insurers in Texas.

1. Progressive

Progressive County Mutual Insurance Company ranked first in Texas, with approximately 20.97% of the statewide personal-auto market based on 2024 written premiums.

That means Progressive claims are extremely common in Dallas, Fort Worth, Plano, Frisco, Arlington, Irving, Garland, McKinney, Denton, and throughout North Texas.

After a wreck, Progressive may be involved in several different ways.

You might be:

  • Hit by a Progressive-insured driver.

  • Making a property-damage claim against Progressive.

  • Making a bodily-injury liability claim against Progressive.

  • Insured by Progressive yourself.

  • Making a PIP, MedPay, collision, or UM/UIM claim through your own Progressive policy.

  • Dealing with Progressive on both sides because both drivers happen to use the same insurer.

The fact that you have Progressive insurance does not mean the Progressive adjuster handling the other driver's liability claim is acting as your adjuster.

The two claims have different interests.

If the other driver caused the crash, the liability adjuster generally represents the interests of the insured driver and insurance company. Be particularly careful about recorded statements, medical authorizations, and settlement releases.

2. State Farm

State Farm Mutual Automobile Insurance Company ranked second in the TDI data, accounting for approximately 16.85% of Texas personal-auto premiums in 2024. State Farm County Mutual Insurance Company of Texas also appears separately in the rankings.

Because State Farm insures so many Texas vehicles, our Dallas–Fort Worth roads inevitably produce a large number of crashes involving State Farm policies.

A State Farm claim can involve questions such as:

  • Who caused the collision?

  • Is the driver actually covered?

  • What are the liability policy limits?

  • Are there multiple injured claimants?

  • Does the injured person have PIP?

  • Does UM/UIM coverage apply?

  • Are medical expenses related to the crash?

  • Are the injuries being blamed on a pre-existing condition?

The insurance company's evaluation is not the final determination of what your case is worth.

3. Allstate

Allstate Fire and Casualty Insurance Company ranked third among individual insurers in the Texas Department of Insurance data, with approximately 7.86% of the personal-auto market. Other Allstate entities also appear farther down the TDI rankings.

Allstate claims can range from straightforward rear-end collisions to serious disputes about liability, causation, damages, or insurance coverage.

The Wooley Law Firm has also handled cases in which Allstate initially disputed liability. Our firm's published case results include an automobile case in which Allstate insured the defendant, initially denied liability, and later offered its policy limits after further investigation and a Stowers demand. Past results do not guarantee a similar result in another case.

A liability denial from Allstate—or any insurance company—does not necessarily mean you should assume the claim is over.

4. GEICO

GEICO is another major Texas auto insurer.

TDI lists both GEICO Texas County Mutual Insurance Company and GEICO County Mutual Insurance Company among the top five individual personal-auto insurers, with 4.16% and 4.03% market share respectively. Government Employees Insurance Company also appears separately farther down the list.

This is an important point when examining insurance data: one consumer insurance brand may write policies through several different legal insurance companies.

The name on an insurance card therefore matters.

After a GEICO accident, preserve a copy or photograph of the actual insurance card rather than simply writing down "GEICO." The policy number and exact underwriting company can become important later.

5. Farmers

Farmers Texas County Mutual Insurance Company ranked among the top individual Texas personal-auto insurers in TDI's 2024 data. Mid-Century Insurance Company of Texas and Farmers Property and Casualty Insurance Company also appear separately in the rankings.

As with many major insurance groups, determining the correct company and policy can matter when a claim involves multiple vehicles, family members, permissive drivers, commercial use, or questions about who actually insured the vehicle.

6. USAA

USAA is especially common in Texas because of the state's large military and veteran population.

Several USAA-related insurance companies appear high on TDI's Texas auto insurance rankings, including United Services Automobile Association, USAA Casualty Insurance Company, and USAA General Indemnity Company.

Even when you are making a claim through your own insurer, however, coverage disputes can arise.

For example, you may have to pursue your own insurance company under uninsured or underinsured motorist coverage when the person who caused your Dallas car accident has no insurance or inadequate limits.

7. Texas Farm Bureau

Texas Farm Bureau is another substantial presence in Texas auto insurance.

Texas Farm Bureau Underwriters, Texas Farm Bureau Mutual Insurance Company, and Texas Farm Bureau Casualty Insurance Company all appear in TDI's list of leading Texas personal-auto insurers.

Again, the important issue after a crash is not merely the brand on the insurance card. You need to determine:

  • The exact insurance company.

  • The policy number.

  • Whether the policy was active on the crash date.

  • Who qualifies as an insured.

  • What vehicle was covered.

  • What liability limits apply.

  • Whether additional coverage may exist.

Other Auto Insurance Companies Commonly Seen in Texas Claims

The Texas auto insurance market extends well beyond the largest national brands.

Other insurers appearing prominently in TDI's 2024 rankings include:

  • Liberty County Mutual Insurance Company

  • Redpoint County Mutual Insurance Company

  • Home State County Mutual Insurance Company

  • Consumers County Mutual Insurance Company

  • Old American County Mutual Fire Insurance Company

  • Auto Club County Mutual Insurance Company

  • Foremost County Mutual Insurance Company

  • Loya Insurance Company

  • Germania Select Insurance Company

  • Dairyland County Mutual Insurance Company

  • Amica Mutual Insurance Company

  • Alinsco Insurance Company

  • Mercury County Mutual Insurance Company

  • Infinity County Mutual Insurance Company

  • Tesla Property and Casualty

If you have never heard of the company on the other driver's insurance card, that does not mean there is no valid coverage.

Texas frequently uses "county mutual" insurance companies as part of the state's auto insurance market. The claims process may also involve administrators, agents, managing general agents, or other companies whose names are different from the legal insurer.

For example, we have a separate guide explaining how to handle an Old American County Mutual bodily injury claim after a Texas wreck.

How Much Auto Insurance Does Texas Require?

Texas drivers are generally required to carry liability insurance with minimum limits of:

  • $30,000 for bodily injury to one person.

  • $60,000 total bodily injury coverage per accident.

  • $25,000 for property damage.

These limits are often referred to as 30/60/25.

Those limits can become a major problem after a serious Dallas–Fort Worth crash.

Imagine one driver causes a collision that seriously injures three people. Even if each injured person has damages exceeding $100,000, a minimum policy may provide only $60,000 in total bodily-injury liability coverage for everyone injured in the accident.

That is why identifying every available insurance policy can be critical after a serious wreck.

This is especially important after a multi-vehicle car accident in Dallas.

Your Own Insurance May Matter Even When Someone Else Caused the Crash

One of the biggest mistakes people make after a car wreck is assuming only the other driver's insurance policy matters.

Your own policy may include valuable coverage.

Personal Injury Protection

Texas insurers must offer Personal Injury Protection, commonly called PIP, and the coverage generally applies unless it has been rejected as permitted by Texas law.

PIP may help with certain medical expenses and lost income after a wreck regardless of who caused the collision.

Learn more about the difference between PIP and MedPay in Texas.

Uninsured and Underinsured Motorist Coverage

Texas auto insurers must also offer uninsured/underinsured motorist coverage, generally subject to a written rejection if the insured does not want it.

UM/UIM coverage can become extremely important when:

  • The at-fault driver has no insurance.

  • The other policy has lapsed.

  • The at-fault vehicle is underinsured.

  • You are injured in a hit-and-run.

  • Several injured victims are competing for limited liability coverage.

For a more detailed explanation, read our guide to UM/UIM insurance coverage after a Texas car wreck.

What If You and the Driver Who Hit You Have the Same Insurance Company?

This happens frequently with companies such as Progressive, State Farm, GEICO, Allstate, and USAA simply because they insure so many Texas vehicles.

Suppose you have Progressive insurance and another Progressive customer rear-ends you.

You may now have several different claims involving Progressive:

The other driver's liability claim: Progressive is evaluating whether its insured caused the collision and what it owes you because of that driver's negligence.

Your collision claim: Your own Progressive coverage may pay to repair or replace your vehicle subject to the terms of your policy.

Your PIP or MedPay claim: Your own policy may provide additional benefits for qualifying accident-related expenses.

Your UM/UIM claim: If the negligent driver's liability limits are not enough, your own underinsured motorist coverage could potentially become important.

These are legally and financially different claims even though the same insurance company's name appears on both sides.

Do not assume that every adjuster who calls you is acting on your behalf.

Do Not Sign an Insurance Release Until You Understand What It Does

After a Dallas car accident, an insurance company may offer money and ask you to sign a release.

A bodily-injury release can end your right to pursue additional compensation against the person or entity being released.

That can become a major problem if you later learn that:

  • Your injuries are worse than expected.

  • You need surgery.

  • You cannot return to work.

  • Your medical bills increase.

  • You have permanent impairment.

  • Another insurance policy may apply.

  • The settlement did not account for future damages.

Before accepting a bodily injury settlement, make sure you understand exactly who is being released and which claims are being resolved.

What Should You Do When an Insurance Adjuster Calls After a DFW Wreck?

You should cooperate with reasonable requirements of your own insurance policy, but that does not mean you should automatically give every adjuster whatever they request.

After a serious wreck:

  1. Find out which insurance company the adjuster represents.

  2. Ask whether the adjuster is handling property damage, liability, PIP, UM/UIM, or another coverage.

  3. Get the claim number.

  4. Keep copies of emails, letters, estimates, and medical correspondence.

  5. Be cautious about recorded statements.

  6. Do not guess about your injuries.

  7. Do not sign a broad medical authorization without understanding it.

  8. Do not sign a final injury release until you understand what rights you are giving up.

Our guide to things not to say to an insurance adjuster explains additional problems that can arise during these conversations.

The Insurance Company Does Not Decide What Your Dallas Car Accident Case Is Worth

Progressive, State Farm, GEICO, Allstate, Farmers, USAA, and other major insurers handle thousands of Texas auto claims.

That does not give an adjuster the final word on your injuries or damages.

A serious Dallas car accident claim may involve compensation for losses such as:

  • Past medical expenses.

  • Future medical expenses.

  • Lost wages.

  • Loss of earning capacity.

  • Physical pain.

  • Mental anguish.

  • Physical impairment.

  • Disfigurement.

  • Property damage.

The specific damages available depend on the facts and Texas law.

If liability, injuries, or insurance coverage are disputed, a Dallas car accident lawyer can investigate the collision, communicate with the insurers, identify available coverage, collect evidence, and evaluate whether a settlement adequately accounts for the harm caused by the wreck.

Frequently Asked Questions About Dallas-Fort Worth Auto Insurance Companies

What is the largest auto insurance company in Texas?

According to the Texas Department of Insurance's 2024 individual-company personal-auto market-share data, Progressive County Mutual Insurance Company ranked first with approximately 20.97% of the market. State Farm Mutual Automobile Insurance Company ranked second at approximately 16.85%.

What insurance companies are most common in Dallas?

There is not a TDI public market-share ranking specifically limited to Dallas. Statewide data shows that Progressive, State Farm, Allstate, GEICO, Farmers, USAA, Texas Farm Bureau, and various county mutual insurers write substantial amounts of Texas personal-auto insurance.

Can I sue someone insured by Progressive, State Farm, or GEICO?

Your legal claim is generally against the person or entity responsible for the crash rather than simply against the liability insurer because of its brand. The insurance company will typically defend its insured and evaluate claims made against the available policy.

What if the driver's insurance company denies coverage?

Do not automatically assume that means your case is over. The reason for the denial should be examined, and other policies or coverages may exist. Read our guide about denied auto insurance coverage in Texas.

Should I talk to the other driver's insurance adjuster?

You can report the claim and provide basic information, but be careful about detailed or recorded statements concerning fault, your injuries, prior medical treatment, or damages. What you say may later be used when the insurer evaluates your claim.
