According to the initial report, the crash involved a truck tractor-semitrailer on Highway 77 southbound. Authorities closed the southbound roadway and diverted traffic at State Highway 239.

Southbound US 77 Closed at Melon Creek
The crash occurred on southbound US 77 at Melon Creek near Refugio.
Because of the tractor-trailer wreck, southbound traffic was diverted at SH 239. Drivers approaching the area were advised to expect delays and use caution.
Authorities had not released information explaining how the semi-truck overturned or whether another vehicle was involved.
What Can Cause a Semi-Truck Rollover?
A tractor-trailer rollover can occur for many reasons, and there is not enough information yet to determine what caused this crash.
Depending on the evidence, investigators may examine issues such as:
vehicle speed;
braking or steering before the rollover;
roadway or shoulder conditions;
tire or mechanical problems;
cargo weight and distribution;
driver fatigue or distraction;
sudden evasive movements; and
involvement of another vehicle.
None of those factors has been established in this incident.
What Evidence May Matter After a Truck Rollover?
If the crash resulted in injuries, potentially important evidence may include:
the tractor's electronic control module or “black box” data;
dashcam or onboard camera footage;
GPS and fleet telematics;
electronic logging device records;
driver hours-of-service information;
dispatch communications;
maintenance and inspection records;
brake and tire records;
cargo and loading documents;
photographs of the crash scene; and
witness statements.
Investigators may also need to identify the motor carrier, tractor owner, trailer owner, and any company responsible for loading or maintaining the truck.
Why Truck Rollover Evidence Should Be Preserved
Commercial trucking companies may possess electronic and business records that can help explain what happened before a crash.
Depending on the circumstances, those records may show vehicle speed, braking, driver work hours, route information, maintenance history, or communications with dispatch.
The fact that a tractor-trailer rolled over does not by itself establish negligence by the driver or trucking company.

Waco Man Killed in Chain-Reaction I-35 Crash Involving Cement Pump Truck and 18-Wheeler
A 50-year-old man was killed early Tuesday morning in a chain-reaction crash involving a passenger vehicle, a cement pump truck, and an 18-wheeler on southbound Interstate 35 near 12th Street in Waco. According to Waco police, the collision happened shortly before 1:00 a.m. The victim was driving a Nissan southbound on I-35 when the Nissan struck the rear of a cement pump truck. Police said the Nissan then lost power and drifted into an adjacent lane, where it was struck by an 18-wheeler. The Nissan driver was pronounced dead at the scene. A passenger in the Nissan and the 18-wheeler driver were treated at a local hospital for minor injuries. The identity of the driver who died had not yet been released pending notification of next of kin. What Happened in the Fatal I-35 Truck Crash in Waco? Waco police reported that the sequence began when the Nissan collided with the back of a cement pump truck. After that impact, the Nissan reportedly lost power and moved into an adjacent lane. An approaching 18-wheeler then struck the disabled Nissan. This type of multi-impact crash can require investigators to determine not only how the first collision occurred, but also whether the second collision could have been avoided. The investigation remained open and ongoing Tuesday morning. Evidence That May Matter in a Chain-Reaction Truck Crash A fatal collision involving two commercial trucks may involve evidence from multiple drivers and companies. Potentially important evidence may include: Dash-camera footage from the 18-wheeler or cement pump truck Electronic control module data GPS and telematics records Electronic logging-device information Driver hours-of-service records Dispatch communications Vehicle inspection and maintenance records Crash-scene photographs and measurements Electronic data from the Nissan Witness statements Roadway lighting and visibility conditions Investigators may also examine how much time passed between the first impact and the second collision, whether the Nissan was visible in the adjacent lane, and whether the 18-wheeler driver had an opportunity to brake or avoid the disabled vehicle. Why Both Commercial Vehicles May Need to Be Investigated Because the crash involved both a cement pump truck and an 18-wheeler, records from more than one commercial operator may become relevant. The first impact and the later 18-wheeler collision are separate parts of the same sequence. Determining responsibility may require reconstructing each impact and evaluating what each driver could see and do in the seconds before the crash. The fact that the Nissan struck the cement pump truck first does not automatically resolve every liability question arising from the later 18-wheeler impact. Wrongful Death Claims After a Fatal Texas Truck Crash When someone is killed in a collision involving commercial vehicles, certain surviving family members may have potential rights under Texas wrongful-death law if negligence contributed to the death. A civil investigation may examine the drivers, trucking companies, vehicle maintenance, electronic truck data, insurance coverage, and other evidence beyond the initial police report.
