The man charged in connection with the September 18, 2026 I-35W crash that killed 18-year-old Ahmed Habib Fadi Dwabe has been released from jail after posting a $15,000 bond.

Fort Worth police arrested 27-year-old Sergio Escorza on a charge of intoxication manslaughter following the early-morning crash on southbound I-35W near Seminary Drive. Court and jail records cited by CBS Texas show Escorza was released Sunday after posting bond.

Escorza is accused of the offense but has not been convicted. The criminal case remains pending.

Habib Dwabe Was Killed After Stopping to Help

Fort Worth police said the crash happened at approximately 2:30 a.m. on Friday, September 18, on southbound I-35W near Seminary Drive.

Dwabe and his friends were returning from the Fort Worth Stockyards when they encountered another motorist who needed help. Dwabe stopped and got out to assist.

Police later arrested Escorza in connection with the crash that killed Dwabe.

Dwabe was from Joshua, Texas, and was 18 years old.

Escorza Released After Posting $15,000 Bond

CBS Texas reported that Escorza was released from jail Sunday after posting a $15,000 bond.

People close to Dwabe told the station they believed the bond amount was too low. That reflects their reaction to the release; the amount itself was set as part of the criminal court process.

A bond is not a determination of guilt or innocence. Its purpose is generally to establish conditions for a defendant’s release while the criminal case proceeds.

Criminal Case and Wrongful Death Claim Are Separate

The intoxication manslaughter prosecution is separate from any potential civil wrongful death case.

A criminal prosecution focuses on whether the government can prove the charged offense beyond a reasonable doubt. A civil wrongful death case examines whether another person’s conduct legally caused the death and what damages may be recoverable under Texas law.

A civil investigation may involve:

  • vehicle event-data recorder information;

  • toxicology evidence;

  • police body-camera footage;

  • dashcam and traffic-camera video;

  • witness statements;

  • 911 calls;

  • photographs and measurements from the crash scene;

  • cell phone evidence when relevant;

  • insurance coverage; and

  • the sequence of the multiple impacts.

A criminal conviction is not necessarily required before a civil claim can proceed.

Evidence Can Still Matter After an Arrest

An arrest does not end the investigation into a fatal multi-vehicle collision.

Investigators may still need to determine:

  • the precise sequence of impacts;

  • vehicle speeds;

  • braking before impact;

  • where each vehicle was positioned;

  • whether other motorists contributed to the collision; and

  • what video or electronic vehicle data shows.

Those issues can matter in a civil case even when criminal charges have already been filed.

Fatal Two-Vehicle Crash at Alma Drive and Cross Bend Road in Plano

A fatal collision involving two vehicles at Alma Drive and Cross Bend Road prompted lane closures Friday evening, according to reporting citing Plano police. WFAA initially reported one death. Officers were investigating the collision, and several lanes were closed during the response.  CBS Texas subsequently reported at least two deaths. The cause was not established in the initial reporting. The reports reviewed did not provide a confirmed reopening time. Attorney Perspective: Investigating a Fatal Intersection Collision After a fatal intersection wreck, understanding what happened requires more than reviewing the vehicles’ final positions. Investigators may need to establish each vehicle’s direction of travel, the traffic controls, and the sequence of movements before impact. Depending on what evidence exists, an attorney may examine: Dashcam and nearby surveillance footage showing the approach to the intersection. Witness statements describing vehicle movements and traffic signals. Scene photographs and measurements documenting damage, debris, and roadway markings. Crash reports and available vehicle data relevant to speed, braking, or impact. These are general investigative considerations. The available reports do not establish a signal violation, speeding, distraction, or fault by any particular driver. Help for Families After a Fatal Plano Car Wreck Families dealing with a sudden loss may need help obtaining records, preserving evidence, and understanding insurance communications. An attorney can investigate the circumstances and assess whether the evidence supports a claim. A Dallas wrongful death lawyer representing families in Plano can identify relevant records and explain potential next steps. A fatal outcome alone does not establish negligence or determine who was responsible. Families should retain photographs, witness information, insurance correspondence, and documents related to the collision. Available video may warrant a prompt preservation request because recording systems have different retention periods. Injured in a Similar Plano Collision? Jacob Gonzalez Killed in Hit-and-Run Crash at Elam Road and South Buckner Boulevard in Dallas

Jacob Gonzalez, 22, died following a hit-and-run collision at Elam Road and South Buckner Boulevard in Southeast Dallas on Sunday, November 1, 2026. According to Dallas police accounts reported by FOX 4, officers responded around 1:28 a.m. Investigators said a westbound Ford SUV on Elam Road entered the intersection against a red light while traveling at high speed and struck a southbound Chevrolet Camaro. The impact sent the Camaro off the road and into a construction-site fence. Gonzalez, its only occupant, was transported to a hospital, where he died. Police said the SUV driver fled on foot before officers arrived. The Dallas Police Department’s Vehicular Crimes Unit investigated the scene and reviewed nearby surveillance recordings. FOX 4 Dallas-Fort Worth Attorney Perspective: Preserving Evidence After a Fatal Hit-and-Run A fatal hit-and-run investigation may involve two immediate questions: how the collision occurred and who was driving the vehicle that left the scene. Identifying a vehicle’s registered owner can provide a starting point, but additional evidence may be needed to establish who was behind the wheel. Witness accounts and video can be especially important when a driver leaves before police arrive. Potentially useful evidence includes: Surveillance and dashcamera recordings showing the collision or the driver’s departure. Witness statements describing the driver and vehicle movements. Vehicle inspections documenting damage and available electronic data. Scene photographs and measurements showing debris and the vehicles’ paths. Police investigative materials documenting observations and evidence collected. These are general investigative considerations. Police findings reported so far should be distinguished from any later findings in court. Helping Families Understand the Available Information After an unexpected death, families often face insurance questions while arranging a funeral and coping with their loss. An attorney can help gather records, communicate with insurers, and evaluate what further investigation may be necessary. Preserving the involved vehicles and original recordings can be important. Before a vehicle is repaired, sold, or destroyed, an attorney can assess whether an inspection would help explain the collision. The Wooley Law Firm handles Dallas car accident cases and wrongful death matters, including cases requiring investigation of a driver’s identity and potentially available insurance coverage. Two Contractors Killed in SH 71 Construction-Zone Crash in Bastrop County - Wrongful Death

Two Contractors Killed in SH 71 Construction-Zone Crash in Bastrop County

Two contractors were killed in a fatal crash in an active construction zone on westbound State Highway 71 near Tucker Hill Lane in Bastrop County early Thursday morning, October 29, 2026. The collision shut down all westbound lanes of SH 71 while emergency crews and investigators responded. The crash occurred within an active TxDOT construction project at Tucker Hill Lane. TxDOT is building a new SH 71 overpass over the existing intersection, along with new frontage roads and other improvements. TxDOT identifies Jordan Foster Construction as the contractor for the project. Additional details about the vehicle involved, the identities of the two workers, and the circumstances leading to the collision have not yet been released. What Happened in the Fatal SH 71 Construction-Zone Crash? The crash occurred on westbound SH 71 near Tucker Hill Lane, close to the Travis County-Bastrop County line. Two contractors working in the construction zone were killed. All westbound lanes were closed following the collision while authorities investigated the scene. At this time, additional information has not been released explaining how the crash occurred or whether other people were injured. Because the investigation remains ongoing, no conclusion should be drawn about fault until authorities determine the sequence of events. The Fatal Crash Happened in an Active SH 71 Construction Project TxDOT is currently constructing a major improvement project at SH 71 and Tucker Hill Lane in Bastrop County. The project includes a new overpass carrying SH 71 over the existing signalized intersection, new one-way frontage roads, and bicycle and pedestrian improvements. TxDOT lists the project cost at approximately $58.5 million and identifies Jordan Foster Construction as the contractor. The fact that the workers were killed inside an active construction zone may make the investigation more complex than an ordinary highway collision. Evidence That May Be Important After a Fatal Work-Zone Crash Investigators may need to examine both the vehicle involved in the collision and the configuration of the construction zone. Potentially important evidence may include: Crash-scene photographs and measurements Traffic-control plans Construction-zone lane configurations Warning signs and electronic message boards Temporary barriers and channelizing devices Lighting conditions Work vehicles and equipment Surveillance or project-camera footage Dash-camera footage Vehicle electronic data Witness statements Contractor safety records Daily construction logs Work assignments and crew locations Communications between the contractor, subcontractors, and TxDOT These records may help determine where the workers were located, what traffic-control measures were in place, and how the collision occurred. Who May Be Responsible After a Construction-Zone Fatality? Fatal construction-zone crashes can involve several different potential sources of responsibility. Depending on the evidence, investigators may examine the actions of: The driver involved in the collision The driver’s employer, if the vehicle was being used for work Construction contractors or subcontractors Traffic-control contractors Other companies responsible for the work zone Other motorists or entities that contributed to the crash The involvement of a contractor or government project does not automatically establish liability. The evidence must show what caused the collision and which parties had responsibility for the circumstances that led to the deaths. Workers’ Compensation and Third-Party Claims May Both Be Relevant When a worker is killed while performing job duties, the family may face legal issues involving both employment-related benefits and potential third-party claims. Depending on the circumstances, benefits may be available through workers’ compensation or another occupational injury system. A separate wrongful-death claim may also be available against a negligent third party whose conduct contributed to the worker’s death. For example, if a motorist unrelated to the employer entered a work zone and caused a fatal collision, the worker’s family may have claims separate from any employment benefits. The available claims depend on the employers, insurance coverage, contractual relationships, and facts of the crash. Wrongful Death Claims After a Fatal Texas Construction-Zone Crash When a person is killed because of another party’s negligence, certain surviving family members may have rights under Texas wrongful-death law. Depending on the circumstances, recoverable damages may include losses involving financial support, companionship, mental anguish, and other damages allowed under Texas law. A separate survival claim may also exist for damages suffered by the deceased person before death. When the person killed was working at the time, the investigation may also need to address employer relationships, workers’ compensation coverage, and whether a third party contributed to the fatal incident. How a Texas Injury Lawyer Can Investigate a Fatal Work-Zone Crash A fatal construction-zone case may require immediate preservation of evidence from several different companies and agencies. An attorney may seek traffic-control plans, project records, photographs, video, vehicle data, contractor communications, safety documents, witness statements, and information identifying every company working at the site. The investigation may also involve determining the relationship between the deceased workers, the general contractor, subcontractors, and other businesses involved in the project.
