Four people were killed after a police pursuit connected to a reported shooting in Tyler ended in a crash on Highway 31 East in Smith County early Sunday morning, September 27, 2026.
According to the Tyler Police Department, officers were investigating reported gunfire when they located a vehicle matching the description provided by a caller. Police attempted to make contact, but the vehicle drove away and a pursuit began.
The chase continued east on Highway 31 at a high rate of speed. Texas Department of Public Safety troopers joined the pursuit after it left Tyler, and police said a DPS trooper ultimately used a PIT maneuver to bring the pursuit to an end.
Three occupants of the fleeing vehicle died at the crash scene. A fourth person was transported to a hospital and later died.
Shooting Investigation Preceded the Pursuit
Tyler Police said officers were initially called to the 1500 block of Lake Placid Road after someone reported hearing gunshots and provided a description of a vehicle associated with the incident.
At approximately 4:00 a.m., police were notified that a local hospital was treating two people with gunshot wounds believed to be connected to the earlier incident.
Officers later located the vehicle described by the caller and attempted to make contact. Police said the vehicle fled, leading officers into a pursuit through Tyler and onto Highway 31 East.
The two shooting victims were separate from the four people who later died in the crash.
DPS Trooper Used PIT Maneuver on Highway 31
Tyler Police said DPS troopers joined the pursuit as it traveled outside the city.
According to the department's account, a DPS trooper used a precision immobilization technique, commonly known as a PIT maneuver, to stop the fleeing vehicle. The fatal crash followed.
The collision was reported at approximately 5:36 a.m. near Highway 31 East and County Road 211.
Eastbound Highway 31 was completely closed for several hours while law enforcement and emergency personnel investigated the scene.
What Should Be Investigated After a Fatal Police Pursuit Crash?
A fatal pursuit involving a PIT maneuver may require review of evidence beyond the final crash scene.
Potentially important evidence may include:
Tyler Police dash-camera video;
DPS dashcam and body-camera footage;
dispatch and radio communications;
GPS and vehicle-location records;
pursuit speeds and duration;
traffic conditions on Highway 31;
DPS and Tyler Police pursuit policies;
records concerning the decision to initiate and continue the pursuit;
records concerning the decision to use a PIT maneuver;
vehicle event-data recorder information;
crash-scene measurements and photographs; and
statements from officers and witnesses.
Those records may help establish the complete timeline, including what officers knew at each stage and what happened immediately before the vehicle crashed.
A PIT Maneuver Does Not By Itself Establish Civil Liability
The fact that law enforcement used a PIT maneuver does not, by itself, establish that an officer or government entity is legally responsible for the resulting deaths.
Likewise, the fact that the vehicle was fleeing does not necessarily answer every question relevant to a civil investigation.
Potential legal issues can depend on why the pursuit began, the threat posed by the fleeing vehicle, vehicle speeds, traffic conditions, law-enforcement policies, decisions made during the pursuit, and the precise mechanics of the final crash.
Claims involving police pursuits and governmental entities can also involve legal standards and immunity issues different from an ordinary car-accident case.
Highway 31 Crash Evidence May Be Important
Physical crash evidence may help reconstruct what happened after the PIT maneuver.
That evidence could include:
vehicle damage;
tire and skid marks;
roadway debris;
final resting positions;
electronic vehicle data;
surveillance video;
dashcam footage; and
crash-reconstruction measurements.
Investigators may also need to determine whether the vehicle struck any other object or vehicle during the final sequence.

Major Crash on Northbound Loop 12 at I-30 in Dallas Closes Three Lanes During Morning Commute
A major car wreck on northbound Loop 12 at Interstate 30 (Tom Landry Freeway) in Dallas caused significant traffic delays early Thursday morning, October 15, 2026. The collision was verified at approximately 5:07 a.m. Traffic information showed the left shoulder and three northbound lanes closed, leaving only limited lanes available while emergency crews responded. Additional information about the vehicles involved and possible injuries has not yet been released. What Happened in the Loop 12 and I-30 Crash in Dallas? The major collision occurred on northbound Loop 12 at I-30, one of the major highway connections serving Dallas and the surrounding area. With three travel lanes and the left shoulder blocked, motorists traveling northbound on Loop 12 during the Thursday morning commute could encounter substantial congestion. At this time, authorities have not released information explaining how the wreck occurred, how many vehicles were involved, or whether anyone was seriously injured. Because this is a developing Dallas traffic incident, no conclusions should be drawn about fault until investigators determine the sequence of events. Evidence After a Serious Dallas Highway Wreck Determining what caused a serious highway collision can require more than the initial police crash report. Evidence that may help establish how the Loop 12 wreck occurred includes: Dash-camera recordings from vehicles involved in or near the crash TxDOT or other traffic-camera footage Nearby business surveillance video Photographs and video of the crash scene Vehicle damage and final resting positions Event data recorder information from the vehicles Witness statements Tire marks, debris, and other roadway evidence Cellphone records when legally relevant Video evidence can be particularly valuable after a collision near a major interchange such as Loop 12 and I-30, where vehicles may be merging, changing lanes, or positioning themselves for highway connections. Who May Be Responsible for a Dallas Car Accident? Liability depends on the evidence showing how the collision occurred. A driver may potentially be responsible if evidence establishes that unsafe speed, following too closely, distracted driving, an unsafe lane change, failure to maintain a single lane, or another negligent act caused the crash. Some Dallas highway wrecks involve more than one potentially responsible driver. A detailed investigation can help determine the sequence of impacts rather than relying solely on competing statements made after the collision. Why Early Investigation Matters After a Dallas Car Wreck Important evidence can disappear quickly after a highway accident. Vehicles are removed, debris is cleared, witnesses leave the scene, and some video recordings may eventually be overwritten. When injuries are serious or liability is disputed, preserving available evidence early can make it easier to reconstruct what happened. An attorney investigating a Dallas car accident may seek traffic-camera footage, vehicle data, witness information, photographs, medical records, insurance information, and other evidence necessary to evaluate the claim.
