A woman was killed and two children suffered life-threatening injuries after a car left State Highway 6 and crashed into a concrete pillar in west Harris County Sunday evening, according to the Harris County Sheriff's Office.
Authorities identified the driver as Jessica Esparza. HCSO said Esparza was driving a gold 2008 Kia Rio northbound in the 4600 block of Highway 6 North at approximately 6:25 p.m. on Sunday, August 16, 2026. A 13-year-old boy and an 11-year-old girl were passengers in the vehicle.
According to investigators, the Kia failed to remain in a single lane, traveled northeast off the roadway into a private parking lot, and struck a concrete pillar. A witness reportedly told authorities that the Kia had been traveling at a high rate of speed before the crash.
Esparza was pronounced dead at the scene. The two children were transported by LifeFlight to a hospital with life-threatening injuries. HCSO said the crash remains under investigation.
Why This Highway 6 Crash Requires Detailed Reconstruction
Although investigators have reported possible high speed and a failure to maintain a single lane, the precise reason the Kia left the roadway still needs to be determined.
A complete investigation may examine:
Vehicle speed before leaving Highway 6
Steering and braking inputs
Event data recorder information
Tire and mechanical condition
Driver distraction
Roadway and weather conditions
Whether an evasive maneuver occurred
Witness statements
Nearby surveillance or dashcam footage
The Kia's path from the roadway into the parking lot
The location and design of the concrete pillar
A witness's description of high speed can be important, but electronic vehicle data and physical crash evidence may provide a more precise picture of what happened.
Children Injured as Passengers May Have Separate Claims
The two children were passengers and therefore had no control over how the Kia was being driven.
That distinction can be important legally.
If negligence by the driver caused or contributed to the crash, injured passengers may potentially have claims against applicable automobile insurance coverage even when the person responsible was driving the vehicle in which they were riding.
Depending on the circumstances, other possible sources of insurance or recovery may also need to be investigated.

Life-Threatening Injuries to Children Can Have Long-Term Consequences
ABC13 reports that both children were transported by LifeFlight with life-threatening injuries.
When a child survives a catastrophic crash, the ultimate effects may not be known immediately. Depending on the injuries, future damages could potentially involve:
Emergency and hospital expenses
Surgery
Rehabilitation
Future medical treatment
Physical impairment
Disfigurement
Pain and suffering
Psychological effects
Loss of future earning capacity in appropriate cases
Claims involving minors can also require additional legal protections when substantial settlement proceeds are involved.
Could the Property or Concrete Pillar Become Part of the Investigation?
The Kia reportedly traveled into a private parking lot before striking a concrete pillar.
That fact does not establish negligence by the property owner.
Investigators may nevertheless document the parking lot, curb configuration, barriers, pillar location, and impact point as part of reconstructing the collision. A property-related claim would require evidence showing that a legally actionable condition actually contributed to the injuries rather than merely being present where the vehicle ultimately crashed.
Fatal Single-Vehicle Crashes Can Still Involve Complex Insurance Issues
A single-vehicle collision does not necessarily mean there are no potential claims for injured passengers.
Insurance issues can depend on:
Who owned the Kia
Who insured it
The relationship between the driver and passengers
Applicable liability coverage
Medical-payment or personal-injury-protection coverage, if available
Other potentially applicable policies
Whether another person, defective vehicle component, or dangerous condition contributed to the crash
Those questions should be investigated before a family assumes that no recovery is available simply because another vehicle was not involved.

Harris County Serious Child Injury Attorney
A crash that kills one person and leaves two children with life-threatening injuries is devastating for everyone affected.
The immediate priority is the children's medical care. From an investigative standpoint, the vehicle should also be preserved so its electronic data, tires, mechanical systems, and physical damage can be examined before evidence is lost.
If your child was seriously injured in a Harris County car accident, Highway 6 crash, Houston-area single-vehicle collision, catastrophic injury wreck, or other serious Texas motor-vehicle accident, you may have the right to seek justice and pursue compensation if the evidence establishes legal responsibility.
