New information has been released about the major eastbound US 80 crash near Forney that shut down the highway near the Kaufman County line early Saturday morning, August 29, 2026.

According to the Texas Department of Public Safety, the two-vehicle collision occurred at approximately 4:25 a.m. on US 80 near FM 460.

DPS said a 39-year-old Forney woman was killed and an 8-month-old infant suffered suspected serious injuries after a Chevrolet Silverado was struck by another vehicle, hit a concrete barrier, and rolled over.

The crash caused significant closures along eastbound US 80, with traffic impacts extending through the Lawson Road and Kaufman County line area.

DPS Says Unsafe Lane Change Preceded Fatal US 80 Crash

According to the preliminary DPS investigation, an Infiniti SUV was traveling eastbound on US 80 in the FM 460 exit lane, while the Chevrolet Silverado was traveling eastbound in the adjacent right lane.

Investigators said the Infiniti driver made an unsafe left lane change and struck the Silverado.

The impact reportedly caused the Silverado to lose control, strike a concrete barrier, and roll over before coming to rest on its roof. The Infiniti continued forward and also struck a concrete barrier.

The DPS findings remain preliminary, and the investigation is ongoing.

Forney Woman Dies, 8-Month-Old Baby Seriously Injured

The Silverado driver was identified by authorities as Juana Berenice Chavez Ojeda, 39, of Forney.

She was transported from the crash scene to a local medical facility, where she was pronounced dead.

An 8-month-old infant traveling in the Silverado was also transported to a hospital with suspected serious injuries.

The driver and two passengers traveling in the Infiniti were reportedly not injured.

This is a devastating collision for the family involved, particularly as they deal simultaneously with the loss of a loved one and serious injuries to an infant.

Evidence After a Fatal Lane-Change Crash on US 80

The preliminary finding that an unsafe lane change preceded the collision makes evidence concerning the vehicles' positions immediately before impact particularly important.

Potential evidence may include:

  • Vehicle event-data recorder information

  • Dashcam footage

  • TxDOT traffic-camera footage

  • Witness statements

  • Photographs and measurements from the crash scene

  • Damage patterns on both vehicles

  • Tire marks and debris

  • Cell phone records when relevant

  • Lane markings and exit-lane configuration

  • 911 and emergency-response records

Electronic vehicle data may help investigators determine speed, braking, throttle position, and other information from the moments surrounding the collision.

Rollover Crashes Can Cause Catastrophic Injuries

The Silverado reportedly struck a concrete barrier and overturned before coming to rest on its roof.

Rollover crashes can expose occupants to multiple violent forces as a vehicle strikes the roadway, barriers, and other objects. Injuries can include traumatic brain injuries, spinal injuries, fractures, internal injuries, and other severe trauma.

When an infant or young child is seriously injured, determining the child's future medical and rehabilitation needs may become especially important because the long-term effects of an injury may not be immediately known.

Wrongful Death Claims After a Fatal Forney Car Accident

If the evidence ultimately establishes that another driver's negligence caused the collision, certain surviving family members may have rights under Texas wrongful death law.

Potential damages depend on the circumstances and may include loss of financial support, loss of companionship, mental anguish, funeral expenses, and other damages recognized by Texas law.

The Wooley Law Firm has also reported on other serious US 80 crashes in this area, including a major US 80 crash at Lawson Road near the Kaufman County line and a three-vehicle US 80 crash near Terrell that prompted a CareFlite response.
