A 57-year-old Odessa motorcyclist was killed in a collision with a Ford F-150 at 42nd Street and FM 1936 in Ector County on Saturday evening, September 19, 2026.
According to the Texas Department of Public Safety, the crash occurred at approximately 8:10 p.m. DPS identified the motorcyclist as Purvine Jerry Brett of Odessa. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
DPS reported that a 2016 Ford F-150 and a 2014 Harley-Davidson Breakout were both traveling westbound on 42nd Street. Preliminary information indicates the motorcycle was traveling behind the pickup when its front end struck the left rear of the Ford. DPS stated in its preliminary report that the motorcyclist failed to control his speed.
The crash remains under investigation.
Motorcycle and Ford F-150 Were Traveling in the Same Lane
According to DPS, the Ford F-150 was traveling westbound in the outside lane of 42nd Street. The Harley-Davidson was traveling in the same direction and same lane behind the pickup.
The motorcycle then collided with the rear portion of the Ford.
DPS also reported that Brett was not wearing a helmet at the time of the collision.
That fact may be relevant to the investigation of injuries, but it does not by itself explain why the collision occurred or resolve every issue that could arise from the wreck.
What Should Be Investigated After a Fatal Motorcycle Crash?
Even when an initial police report identifies a contributing factor, a serious or fatal motorcycle collision may warrant a broader examination of the circumstances.
Potential evidence may include:
event-data recorder information from the pickup;
motorcycle and pickup damage patterns;
dashcam or nearby surveillance footage;
witness statements;
photographs and measurements from the scene;
roadway lighting and visibility;
braking or tire marks;
the relative speeds of both vehicles; and
the movements of each vehicle immediately before impact.
Investigators may also consider whether either vehicle changed speed or position shortly before the crash.
Preliminary DPS Findings Are Not the Same as a Final Liability Determination
DPS's preliminary report states that the motorcycle rider failed to control his speed. That is an important investigative finding, but the agency also stated that the crash remains under investigation.
In a civil case, responsibility ultimately depends on the complete evidence. Police findings can be important, but vehicle data, video, witness testimony, physical evidence, and other information may also affect how a collision is understood.
There is currently no public information indicating that the Ford driver was cited or accused of wrongdoing.
Motorcycle Crashes Can Result in Severe or Fatal Injuries
Motorcyclists have substantially less physical protection than occupants of passenger vehicles. When a motorcycle collides with a pickup, SUV, or commercial vehicle, even a relatively brief impact can result in catastrophic injuries.

Bicycle & Pedestrian AccidentsBicyclist Killed in Crash on E. Main Street at Bill Irwin Street in Grand Prairie
A man died after a collision involving a car and a bicycle Tuesday morning in the 2100 block of E. Main Street, according to Grand Prairie police. Officers were called to the scene at approximately 10 a.m. Grand Prairie Fire Department medics pronounced the cyclist dead at the scene. According to investigators, the cyclist was traveling westbound along the eastbound shoulder of E. Main Street. A motorist stopped at the intersection of Bill Irwin Street before entering Main Street, where the vehicle struck the cyclist. Police said the driver was not injured and was cooperating with investigators. The Dallas County Medical Examiner’s Office was expected to release the cyclist’s identity after notifying next of kin. The investigation remained ongoing at the time of the report. Attorney Perspective: Examining the Evidence After a Fatal Bicycle Crash A fatal bicycle collision requires a careful review of the complete sequence of events. The initial account describes the cyclist’s direction of travel and the motorist’s entry onto Main Street, but it does not resolve every question about visibility, timing, or the opportunity to avoid impact. An attorney reviewing the collision may examine: Available surveillance or dashcam footage showing the intersection and the moments before impact. Sightlines from Bill Irwin Street, including potential obstructions and the driver’s view of the shoulder. Vehicle and bicycle damage, debris, and other physical evidence identifying the point of contact. Witness statements and investigative records documenting each road user’s movements. The report that the motorist stopped before entering Main Street is one part of the evidence. A complete review would also consider what happened as the vehicle entered the roadway. These are investigative questions, not conclusions that either person caused the crash. Preserving Evidence and Reviewing a Family’s Options Families facing a sudden loss may need help obtaining records and understanding the investigation. Preserving the bicycle, vehicle evidence, photographs, and available recordings can help protect information relevant to that review. A Dallas wrongful death lawyer can investigate the circumstances, review insurance coverage, and assess whether the evidence supports a civil claim. The available news report alone does not establish whether a wrongful death claim is warranted. Bicycle & Pedestrian Accidents5-Year-Old Boy in Critical Condition After Accident
A 5-year-old boy was critically injured after being struck by an SUV on Broadway Boulevard in Garland Saturday afternoon. Garland police and firefighters responded at approximately 1:30 p.m. to the southbound lanes of Broadway Boulevard near Tacoma Drive after receiving reports of a serious collision involving a child pedestrian. When first responders arrived, they found the 5-year-old boy unconscious. He was transported to an area hospital, where authorities said he remained in critical condition. What Happened in the Garland Pedestrian Crash? According to the preliminary Garland police investigation, investigators believe the child ran into the roadway and was struck by an SUV traveling southbound on Broadway Boulevard near Tacoma Drive. The SUV driver remained at the scene and cooperated with investigators. Based on the information available following the crash, police said charges against the driver were not expected, although the investigation remains ongoing. The child's identity has not been publicly released. Evidence That May Matter After a Serious Pedestrian Accident Even when police make an initial determination about how a pedestrian collision occurred, serious-injury cases can require a detailed review of the available evidence. Potentially important evidence may include: Traffic or surveillance-camera footage Dash-camera recordings Witness statements Vehicle speed and electronic data Crash-scene photographs and measurements Sight-distance and visibility conditions Roadway lighting The location of crosswalks and traffic controls The investigating officer's crash report When a young child is involved, investigators may also carefully examine what the driver could see and how much time was available to perceive and react before impact. Can a Driver Be Liable When a Pedestrian Enters the Roadway? Liability depends on the specific facts. A driver is not automatically responsible simply because a pedestrian is struck. Investigators may consider the pedestrian's movements, the driver's speed and attention, visibility, roadway conditions, and whether the driver had a reasonable opportunity to avoid the collision. In this Garland crash, police currently say they do not expect charges against the SUV driver. A decision not to pursue criminal charges, however, is separate from any potential civil-liability analysis. Injured in a Garland Pedestrian or Car Accident? Bicycle & Pedestrian AccidentsPedestrian Fatality on I-30 in Grand Prairie
A pedestrian was killed Wednesday evening after being struck by an SUV on an eastbound Interstate 30 TEXpress entrance ramp near MacArthur Boulevard in Grand Prairie. According to Grand Prairie police, the collision happened at approximately 7:50 p.m. The pedestrian had been traveling in a vehicle that became disabled. After getting out and walking along the ramp, the person was struck by a Kia SUV. Grand Prairie Fire Department paramedics pronounced the pedestrian dead at the scene. The SUV driver was not injured and was cooperating with investigators. The pedestrian’s identity had not yet been released pending notification of family members. The crash remains under investigation. What Happened in the Fatal I-30 Pedestrian Crash? Police said the pedestrian had exited a disabled vehicle and was walking along the entrance ramp to the eastbound I-30 TEXpress lanes near MacArthur Boulevard when the collision occurred. Investigators have not yet announced what caused the Kia SUV to strike the pedestrian or whether any additional factors contributed to the crash. Because the investigation remains ongoing, no conclusions should be drawn about fault. Evidence That May Matter After a Fatal Pedestrian Collision A serious pedestrian crash on an interstate ramp may require investigators to examine: Dash-camera or surveillance footage Vehicle speed and electronic data Roadway lighting and visibility The location of the disabled vehicle The pedestrian’s position before impact Witness statements Cellphone records when relevant Crash-scene photographs and measurements Evidence showing when the disabled vehicle stopped and how long the pedestrian had been outside the vehicle may also help investigators reconstruct what happened. Disabled Vehicles Can Create Serious Highway Dangers A breakdown on an interstate or TEXpress ramp can place motorists in a dangerous position, particularly at night or in areas with limited shoulder space. When a crash follows a disabled vehicle, investigators may need to determine whether warning lights were activated, where the vehicle was stopped, what visibility conditions existed, and whether approaching motorists had an opportunity to see and avoid a person outside the vehicle. Those questions are fact-specific and do not establish fault by themselves. Wrongful Death Claims After a Fatal Grand Prairie Crash When a pedestrian is killed in a traffic collision, certain surviving family members may have potential rights under Texas wrongful-death law if another person’s negligence caused the death. A civil investigation can be separate from the police investigation and may examine vehicle data, available video, witness testimony, insurance coverage, and other evidence bearing on how the collision occurred.
