Drivers who regularly use the Dallas North Tollway, President George Bush Turnpike, and other North Texas toll roads may notice a change in who responds after a crash.
The long-running agreement under which the Texas Department of Public Safety provided dedicated law-enforcement services on North Texas Tollway Authority roads expired on August 31, 2026.
Beginning September 1, 2026, local police departments began taking a larger role in traffic enforcement and crash response on NTTA roads within their jurisdictions.
For Dallas drivers, that means the Dallas Police Department is now responsible for primary traffic enforcement and crash response on NTTA roadways located within the City of Dallas.
Dallas Police Takes Over Crash Response on NTTA Roads in Dallas
Dallas Police announced that it expanded its traffic operations beginning September 1 to cover NTTA roadways inside Dallas.
That includes the Dallas North Tollway and portions of the President George Bush Turnpike that fall within Dallas city limits.
The department says its expanded Traffic Unit will:
Respond to and investigate traffic crashes;
Conduct traffic enforcement;
Address dangerous driving behavior;
Assist with traffic management after major incidents; and
Provide dedicated traffic-safety resources on Dallas freeways and tollways.
For motorists, the practical takeaway is simple: if you are involved in a serious crash on an NTTA toll road, the investigating agency may now be the local police department rather than a Texas DPS trooper.
Why the Investigating Agency Matters After a Tollway Accident
Who investigates the wreck can become important later if someone is seriously injured.
The investigating agency may possess or generate evidence such as:
Crash reports;
Officer body-camera recordings;
Dash-camera recordings;
Photographs from the crash scene;
Measurements and diagrams;
Witness information;
911 and dispatch recordings;
Statements made by drivers;
Citations;
Supplemental investigation reports; and
Records identifying additional responding agencies.
Someone injured in a Dallas car accident should identify which agency actually investigated the collision instead of assuming that DPS handled the crash simply because it occurred on a toll road.
That distinction may determine where records requests need to be sent.
NTTA May Have Important Evidence Separate From the Police
The police report is only one potential source of evidence after a serious Dallas North Tollway accident.
NTTA operates an extensive roadway system with traffic-management and incident-response infrastructure. Depending on the location and circumstances of a collision, potentially relevant evidence could include traffic-camera information, incident-management records, roadway photographs, lane-closure information, communications, or records concerning conditions on the tollway.
Whether particular footage or records exist depends on the circumstances.
This is one reason evidence should be investigated quickly after a serious tollway wreck.
Traffic Cameras Can Be Especially Important
A collision on the Dallas North Tollway may happen in seconds.
Drivers may disagree about:
Who changed lanes;
Whether one vehicle was speeding;
Whether traffic suddenly stopped;
Which vehicle entered another driver's lane;
Whether a driver was following too closely;
Whether a commercial truck failed to maintain its lane; or
How a multi-vehicle collision began.
Video can sometimes provide evidence that is more objective than the drivers' competing recollections.
Dashcam video, nearby business surveillance, vehicle cameras, and potentially available roadway-camera information should therefore be investigated as soon as possible.
Evidence After a Dallas North Tollway 18-Wheeler Crash
The issue becomes even more important when an 18-wheeler or commercial vehicle is involved.
A serious Dallas truck accident may involve evidence that does not exist in an ordinary passenger-car collision.
Depending on the vehicle and trucking company, important evidence may include:
Electronic logging device records;
Engine control module data;
Event data recorder information;
Forward-facing camera footage;
Driver-facing camera footage;
GPS and telematics information;
Dispatch communications;
Driver qualification records;
Hours-of-service records;
Vehicle inspection reports;
Maintenance records;
Post-crash drug and alcohol testing; and
Trucking-company investigation materials.
Some electronic information can be overwritten or lost over time. An attorney investigating a serious commercial vehicle wreck may therefore send preservation notices quickly to the trucking company, vehicle owner, insurer, and other entities possessing relevant evidence.
What Should You Do After a Dallas Tollway Crash?
After a serious collision on the Dallas North Tollway or another NTTA roadway, safety comes first.
Call 911 when emergency assistance is needed and obtain appropriate medical treatment.
When possible, it can also help to:
Photograph the vehicles and roadway.
Save dashcam footage immediately.
Obtain the other driver's insurance and identifying information.
Identify witnesses.
Write down which police agency responded.
Preserve photographs, videos, texts, and other evidence.
Avoid giving unnecessary recorded statements to another driver's insurance carrier.
Obtain the crash report once it becomes available.
Investigate whether additional tollway or roadway evidence exists.
The recent enforcement transition makes identifying the responding agency particularly important.
Who Handles a Dallas North Tollway Accident Report Now?
There is no single answer for every North Texas tollway crash.
The investigating department may depend upon exactly where the collision occurred.
Within Dallas, Dallas Police has announced that it is assuming primary crash-response and traffic-enforcement responsibilities on NTTA roads within the city.
A collision farther north on the Dallas North Tollway could involve a different local jurisdiction.
That means the location of the accident can determine which department prepares the crash report and possesses related law-enforcement evidence.
Dallas North Tollway Crashes Can Become Complicated Injury Claims
Tollway crashes frequently involve highway speeds, congested traffic, entrance and exit ramps, sudden braking, lane changes, commercial vehicles, and multiple cars.
Determining responsibility may require much more than reading the initial crash report.
A thorough investigation may examine:
Vehicle damage;
Physical evidence;
Witness testimony;
Video;
Electronic vehicle information;
Police records;
NTTA-related records;
Cell-phone evidence where appropriate;
Commercial vehicle records; and
Accident-reconstruction evidence.
The investigating officer's conclusions can be important, but they do not necessarily determine civil liability by themselves.

Within Dallas, Dallas Police announced that it assumed primary responsibility on NTTA roads inside the city beginning September 1.
Who do I call after a crash on the Dallas North Tollway?
Call 911 for an emergency or serious collision. The appropriate local law-enforcement agency can then be dispatched based on the crash location.
Can NTTA cameras prove who caused a crash?
Potential video or other roadway information may be useful, but whether relevant footage exists or is available depends on the particular collision. Other evidence such as dashcams, vehicle data, witnesses, photographs, and physical damage may also be important.
Can I request body-camera video from a tollway crash?
If local police officers responded and recorded the investigation, body-camera or dash-camera recordings may exist. The proper records request generally depends on which agency responded and applicable Texas law.

Major Crash on Northbound Loop 12 at I-30 in Dallas Closes Three Lanes During Morning Commute
A major car wreck on northbound Loop 12 at Interstate 30 (Tom Landry Freeway) in Dallas caused significant traffic delays early Thursday morning, October 15, 2026. The collision was verified at approximately 5:07 a.m. Traffic information showed the left shoulder and three northbound lanes closed, leaving only limited lanes available while emergency crews responded. Additional information about the vehicles involved and possible injuries has not yet been released. What Happened in the Loop 12 and I-30 Crash in Dallas? The major collision occurred on northbound Loop 12 at I-30, one of the major highway connections serving Dallas and the surrounding area. With three travel lanes and the left shoulder blocked, motorists traveling northbound on Loop 12 during the Thursday morning commute could encounter substantial congestion. At this time, authorities have not released information explaining how the wreck occurred, how many vehicles were involved, or whether anyone was seriously injured. Because this is a developing Dallas traffic incident, no conclusions should be drawn about fault until investigators determine the sequence of events. Evidence After a Serious Dallas Highway Wreck Determining what caused a serious highway collision can require more than the initial police crash report. Evidence that may help establish how the Loop 12 wreck occurred includes: Dash-camera recordings from vehicles involved in or near the crash TxDOT or other traffic-camera footage Nearby business surveillance video Photographs and video of the crash scene Vehicle damage and final resting positions Event data recorder information from the vehicles Witness statements Tire marks, debris, and other roadway evidence Cellphone records when legally relevant Video evidence can be particularly valuable after a collision near a major interchange such as Loop 12 and I-30, where vehicles may be merging, changing lanes, or positioning themselves for highway connections. Who May Be Responsible for a Dallas Car Accident? Liability depends on the evidence showing how the collision occurred. A driver may potentially be responsible if evidence establishes that unsafe speed, following too closely, distracted driving, an unsafe lane change, failure to maintain a single lane, or another negligent act caused the crash. Some Dallas highway wrecks involve more than one potentially responsible driver. A detailed investigation can help determine the sequence of impacts rather than relying solely on competing statements made after the collision. Why Early Investigation Matters After a Dallas Car Wreck Important evidence can disappear quickly after a highway accident. Vehicles are removed, debris is cleared, witnesses leave the scene, and some video recordings may eventually be overwritten. When injuries are serious or liability is disputed, preserving available evidence early can make it easier to reconstruct what happened. An attorney investigating a Dallas car accident may seek traffic-camera footage, vehicle data, witness information, photographs, medical records, insurance information, and other evidence necessary to evaluate the claim.
