A vehicle crashed into a Mansfield Fire Department fire engine that had been positioned to protect emergency crews working an earlier wreck on southbound State Highway 360 early Sunday morning.
The secondary collision happened at approximately 1:30 a.m. on October 4, 2026. Mansfield Fire Department Engine 5 had been intentionally positioned as a protective barrier between approaching traffic and firefighters and paramedics working the original crash scene.
Three firefighters were inside the engine when it was struck. All three were wearing seat belts and were reported to be okay. The driver of the vehicle that hit the fire engine was taken to a hospital in stable condition. What Happened in the SH 360 Crash in Mansfield?
Mansfield firefighters were already responding to an earlier collision on southbound SH 360 when Engine 5 was placed in a blocking position to protect crews working in the roadway.
A second vehicle then struck the fire engine.
After the impact, the firefighters inside Engine 5 got out and immediately began helping the driver of the vehicle that had hit them. Firefighters reportedly had to gain access through a jammed vehicle door before providing medical care.
Authorities have not released additional information explaining why the driver struck the fire truck.
Why Fire Engines Are Used to Protect Highway Crash Scenes
Emergency vehicles are sometimes intentionally placed between approaching traffic and a crash scene to create a physical barrier for firefighters, paramedics, police officers, crash victims, and other people working near moving traffic.
Mansfield Fire officials said roadway incidents are among the most dangerous environments emergency responders face and explained that lane closures and blocking positions are used to reduce the risk of secondary crashes.
This incident illustrates how a crash scene can remain dangerous even after the original collision has already occurred.
Texas Drivers Must Move Over or Slow Down for Emergency Vehicles
Texas law requires drivers approaching certain stationary emergency vehicles displaying required warning lights to move out of the lane closest to the emergency vehicle when possible.
If a driver cannot safely change lanes, Texas Transportation Code § 545.157 requires the driver to reduce speed. On a roadway with a posted speed limit of at least 25 mph, the statute generally requires slowing to at least 20 mph below the posted limit. Texas Constitution and Statutes
Whether any violation of that law occurred in this Mansfield crash has not been established.
Evidence That May Matter After a Secondary Highway Crash
A collision with an emergency vehicle protecting an existing crash scene may generate substantial evidence because emergency personnel were already present.
Potential evidence could include:
Fire-engine or apparatus camera footage
Police dash-camera and body-camera recordings
Emergency vehicle lighting and positioning
Crash-scene photographs
Vehicle event-data recorder information
Cellphone records when relevant
Witness statements from firefighters and other responders
Roadway lighting and visibility conditions
Tire marks and vehicle damage
Dispatch and emergency-response records
Because the fire engine was already stationary at an active emergency scene, investigators may closely examine the approaching vehicle's speed, lane position, braking, and movements before impact.
