A man was killed early Sunday morning, May 31, 2026, after stepping out of his vehicle following a minor crash on a Fort Worth freeway.

According to FOX 4, Fort Worth police said officers responded just before 2 a.m. to the southbound lanes of the South Freeway near East Ripy Street. Investigators said the man got out to inspect damage from a minor crash when another vehicle struck him. The driver who hit him left the scene but was later located and detained. The man died at the scene, and the Traffic Investigation Unit is leading the investigation.

Freeway crashes can become deadly within seconds, especially when a disabled vehicle or minor collision leaves someone exposed to fast-moving traffic. Investigators may need to determine whether the striking driver was speeding, distracted, impaired, failed to keep a proper lookout, or had enough time and space to avoid the pedestrian. Evidence such as dashcam footage, nearby surveillance video, vehicle damage, debris patterns, lighting conditions, 911 calls, witness statements, and event data recorder information may be critical in understanding what happened.

If you lost a loved one in a Fort Worth freeway crash, South Freeway pedestrian accident, or fatal hit-and-run collision, you may have the right to seek justice and pursue compensation for funeral expenses, loss of companionship, mental anguish, lost financial support, and other damages.
