A fatal single-vehicle crash was reported on inbound US-290 near Dacoma Street in Houston late Thursday night, August 20, 2026.
According to information provided by Houston police, a Dodge Ram pickup truck struck a wall and caught fire. One person was pronounced deceased at the scene.
The wreck caused a major closure of the inbound lanes while emergency crews responded and investigators worked to determine how the crash occurred.
TxDOT also issued an alert reporting that eastbound US-290 was closed before Mangum/Dacoma Road during the incident.
What Caused the Fatal US-290 Crash?
The circumstances leading up to the collision remain under investigation.
At this stage, there is no confirmed information establishing why the Dodge Ram left its lane or struck the wall. Investigators may examine vehicle speed, roadway conditions, driver condition, mechanical issues, electronic vehicle data, and any available surveillance or traffic-camera footage.
Because this appears to have been a single-vehicle crash, it would be premature to assume that driver error was the only possible cause. In some cases, another vehicle, a roadway hazard, a mechanical defect, or another outside factor may contribute even when only one vehicle ultimately crashes.
Fire Can Complicate a Fatal Crash Investigation
The fact that the pickup caught fire may make the investigation more complex.
A severe post-crash fire can damage physical evidence inside a vehicle, but investigators may still be able to recover useful information from the vehicle's electronic systems, roadway markings, debris patterns, traffic cameras, witnesses, and other records.
Preserving that evidence can be especially important when the person driving the vehicle does not survive to explain what happened.
US-290 Is a Major Houston Traffic Corridor
US-290 carries heavy traffic through northwest Houston and Harris County.
A TxDOT traffic study examining US-290 found thousands of crashes along the highway over a five-year period, with the greatest crash concentration occurring in urban portions of the corridor, including the Houston area.
That broader crash history does not explain what caused this particular collision, but it underscores why a serious wreck on US-290 deserves a careful, evidence-based investigation.
Wrongful Death Questions After a Fatal Houston Crash
The loss of a person in a fiery highway crash is devastating for the family left behind.
If later evidence shows that another person, company, defective vehicle component, or other legally responsible party contributed to the collision, surviving family members may have potential rights under Texas law.
The Wooley Law Firm provides additional information about Texas wrongful death claims. The firm represents families in serious injury and wrongful death matters throughout Texas.
At this point, however, no evidence has been reported establishing that another person or company was responsible for this US-290 crash.
Lost a Loved One in a Houston Highway Crash?
Fatal crashes should be investigated based on physical evidence, electronic data, witness information, and the complete circumstances surrounding the collision—not assumptions made shortly after the wreck.
If you lost a loved one in a Houston car accident, US-290 crash, Dacoma Street collision, fiery vehicle wreck, or other fatal Texas roadway accident, you may have the right to seek justice and pursue compensation if the evidence establishes legal responsibility.

18-Wheeler Crashes, Catches Fire on I-20 in Kilgore
An 18-wheeler crashed into the median and caught fire on eastbound Interstate 20 in Kilgore on August 20, 2026, shutting down the interstate and prompting a hazardous-materials response because of a significant diesel spill. According to KLTV, the crash happened near mile marker 588, between State Highway 42 North and the U.S. 259/State Highway 31 interchange. Kilgore Fire Marshal Terry Linder said the truck driver suffered non-life-threatening injuries after the tractor-trailer left the roadway and entered the median. The collision and resulting fire forced authorities to close eastbound I-20 while emergency crews worked at the scene. Diesel Spill Prompts Hazmat Response The wreck also resulted in what officials described as an extensive diesel fuel leak. The Longview Fire Department responded to assist with hazardous-materials cleanup while crews dealt with the damaged truck, fire, and spilled fuel. Authorities expected the interstate to remain closed for several hours during the response. A commercial truck crash involving a fuel spill can require a much larger emergency response than a typical passenger-vehicle collision. In addition to treating injuries and removing damaged vehicles, crews may need to contain fuel, protect nearby drainage areas, clean the roadway, and determine whether any additional environmental hazards are present. What Caused the Kilgore I-20 Truck Crash? The cause of the crash remained under investigation, according to the Kilgore fire marshal. The fact that the 18-wheeler entered the median does not, by itself, establish why the crash happened or whether anyone was legally at fault. A complete investigation may examine factors such as the truck's speed, braking, steering inputs, tire condition, mechanical systems, driver fatigue or distraction, roadway conditions, and whether another vehicle contributed to the sequence of events. Evidence After a Serious 18-Wheeler Crash Commercial truck wrecks can involve evidence that does not exist in a typical car accident. Depending on the truck and carrier, potentially important evidence may include electronic control module data, dash-camera footage, GPS and telematics records, electronic logging-device information, maintenance and inspection records, driver qualification documents, dispatch communications, and photographs of the truck and roadway. The Wooley Law Firm represents people injured in Texas 18-wheeler and commercial truck accidents. The firm's truck-accident resources discuss why early investigation can matter when electronic and trucking-company records may be important to determining how a collision occurred. I-20 Is a Major Texas Trucking Corridor Interstate 20 carries substantial commercial traffic across East Texas and connects communities including Kilgore, Longview, Tyler-area corridors, Dallas-Fort Worth, and points farther west. This was not the only serious commercial truck crash reported on I-20 in Texas in recent days. The Wooley Law Firm recently reported on an 18-wheeler crash that shut down I-20 in Talty and a three-semi collision on I-20 in Martin County. Each wreck has to be evaluated on its own facts, and the presence of an 18-wheeler does not automatically mean the truck driver or trucking company caused the crash. Injured in an I-20 Truck Wreck in Texas? A collision involving an 18-wheeler, fire, and significant fuel spill can require extensive investigation to determine what happened and whether preventable conduct contributed to the wreck. If you were injured in a Kilgore 18-wheeler accident, Gregg County truck wreck, I-20 semi-truck collision, or other commercial vehicle crash in Texas, you may have the right to seek justice and pursue compensation for medical expenses, pain and suffering, lost wages, mental anguish, impairment, and other damages if the evidence establishes legal responsibility. Major 18-Wheeler Crash on Loop 567 in Granbury Prompts Extrication and Air Evac Response
A major crash involving an 18-wheeler and another vehicle was reported on Loop 567 near Porter Court in Granbury, Texas, on August 20, 2026. According to emergency incident information, Granbury Fire Department, North Hood County Fire Department, Texas EMS, and law enforcement responded to the scene, where at least one person reportedly required extrication from a vehicle. Air Evac Lifeteam was also launched to the crash scene. The City of Granbury separately confirmed that an 18-wheeler crash shut down Loop 567 in both directions for approximately one-quarter mile near the Granbury Police Department headquarters. Officials warned that the roadway could remain closed for several hours while crews worked at the scene. Early information does not establish exactly how the collision occurred, how many people were injured, or whether anyone was ultimately transported by medical helicopter. Extrication Underway After Hood County Truck Wreck The reported need for extrication indicates that firefighters were working to remove someone from a damaged vehicle. Extrication can involve specialized rescue equipment when crash damage prevents a driver or passenger from getting out safely. However, the fact that extrication was required does not by itself establish the extent of a person's injuries. Likewise, the launch of an Air Evac helicopter indicates that emergency responders were preparing for the possibility of rapid medical transport. It does not necessarily mean a patient was ultimately flown from the scene. Loop 567 Closed After the 18-Wheeler Crash The City of Granbury advised motorists that Loop 567 was closed in both directions near the Granbury Police Department because of the 18-wheeler collision. Loop 567 is also a designated commercial truck route within Granbury, making it an important roadway for tractor-trailers and other large commercial vehicles traveling through the area. Drivers were urged to avoid the area while emergency personnel, law enforcement, and recovery crews handled the scene. Serious Truck Crashes Require a Detailed Investigation When a passenger vehicle and an 18-wheeler are involved in a serious collision, investigators may need to determine much more than simply which vehicle struck the other. Depending on the circumstances, important evidence could include the truck's electronic control module or “black box,” dash-camera footage, electronic logging-device records, GPS and telematics information, driver qualification records, inspection and maintenance documents, cellphone records, witness statements, crash-scene photographs, and physical evidence from both vehicles. The Wooley Law Firm explains more about this evidence in its guide to 18-wheeler black box data after a Dallas-Fort Worth truck wreck. Electronic truck information can sometimes provide objective evidence concerning speed, braking, throttle position, and other events immediately before a collision. Because some electronic and company records can be overwritten or lost, evidence preservation can become particularly important after a severe commercial vehicle crash. Who Could Be Responsible for a Granbury 18-Wheeler Accident? The involvement of a semi-truck does not by itself establish that the truck driver or trucking company was negligent. A complete investigation may examine the conduct of every driver involved, along with factors such as speed, following distance, distraction, fatigue, right-of-way, vehicle maintenance, brakes and tires, cargo, roadway conditions, and whether applicable trucking safety requirements were followed. Depending on what the evidence shows, potential claims could involve a truck driver, trucking company, employer, vehicle owner, maintenance company, cargo-loading company, or another party. The Wooley Law Firm represents people injured in Texas 18-wheeler and commercial truck accidents. Injured in a Granbury or Hood County Truck Wreck? A collision serious enough to require extrication and an air-medical response deserves a careful investigation into what happened and what evidence should be preserved. If you were injured in a Granbury 18-wheeler accident, Hood County truck wreck, Loop 567 collision, semi-truck crash, or serious commercial vehicle accident, you may have the right to seek justice and pursue compensation for medical expenses, pain and suffering, lost wages, mental anguish, impairment, and other damages if the evidence establishes legal responsibility. 18-Wheeler Driver Airlifted After US 59 Crash Near Diboll
A truck driver had to be cut from the wreckage of his cab after two 18-wheelers collided on U.S. 59 south of Diboll in Polk County early Wednesday morning, August 19, 2026. According to a preliminary Texas DPS investigation reported by KTRE, a 1991 International pulling a flatbed trailer was traveling south and attempting to use a crossover to head north. Investigators say the truck entered the path of a northbound 2024 Freightliner pulling a box trailer, resulting in a collision. DPS preliminarily reported that the International failed to yield at a yield sign. The Freightliner driver, identified by the Lufkin Fire Department as Adoloph Ross of Elm Grove, Louisiana, became trapped inside the heavily damaged cab. Steel poles from the wreck complicated the rescue. Firefighters said Ross remained conscious and able to communicate with crews while they worked to free him. After an extraction lasting about 90 minutes, Ross was flown to a Houston hospital. His injuries were described as non-life-threatening. Heavy Rescue Required After the Truck Crash The response involved the Lufkin Fire Department's Special Operations team along with Diboll, Livingston and Corrigan firefighters, EMS personnel, DPS troopers, TxDOT and local wreckers. Rescue crews had to carefully lift material resting around the damaged cab before the driver could be removed. A rescue operation of this complexity underscores how violent commercial-truck collisions can be even when the person trapped ultimately survives. The Yield and Turning Maneuver Will Be Central to the Investigation Based on the preliminary DPS account, investigators will likely focus closely on the movement of the International as it attempted to change direction through the crossover. Important questions may include the truck's position before the turn, the approaching Freightliner's speed and distance, available sight lines, traffic-control signs, and whether either driver had enough time to brake or take evasive action. The preliminary finding that one truck failed to yield is significant, but final responsibility should still be based on the complete investigation rather than an early crash summary. Commercial-Truck Evidence Should Be Preserved Because two tractor-trailers were involved, potentially important evidence may exist outside the physical crash scene. That evidence can include: Electronic control module data Dashcam footage GPS and telematics records Driver logs and hours-of-service information Dispatch communications Pre-trip inspection records Maintenance and repair history Trailer and cargo information Driver qualification records Crash-scene photographs and measurements The Wooley Law Firm's 18-wheeler accident practice discusses the importance of preserving electronic and company-controlled evidence after serious commercial-truck wrecks. The firm has also covered other East Texas commercial-vehicle crashes, including an 18-wheeler rollover on Highway 271 in Upshur County. Injured in a Polk County 18-Wheeler Crash? A serious truck collision can result in hospitalization, surgery, lost income, pain, impairment, and significant future medical needs even when the initial injuries are not considered life-threatening. If you were injured in a Polk County 18-wheeler accident, U.S. 59 truck crash, Diboll-area collision, crossover wreck, or other serious Texas commercial-vehicle accident, you may have the right to seek justice and pursue compensation if the evidence establishes legal responsibility.
