An 18-year-old woman was killed in a single-vehicle rollover crash near North Walton Walker Boulevard and Singleton Road in Dallas late Thursday night.
Dallas police said Serenity Rangel, 18, lost control of her vehicle shortly before midnight. Surveillance video from a nearby business showed the car leaving the roadway and flipping over. Rangel died as a result of the crash.
The collision remains under investigation, and authorities have not released a final determination explaining why Rangel lost control of the vehicle.
What Happened in the Fatal Dallas Rollover Crash?
According to Dallas police, Rangel was driving on North Walton Walker Boulevard when she lost control of her vehicle.
Surveillance footage obtained from a nearby business captured the vehicle veering from the roadway and overturning. NBC 5 reported that Rangel was the driver and that she was killed in the crash.
Rangel had graduated from Nimitz High School the previous year and was attending community college, according to her family. She would have turned 19 the following month.
Surveillance Video Could Be Important to the Investigation
Video from nearby businesses can be especially valuable in a serious rollover crash because it may help investigators reconstruct what occurred before a vehicle left the roadway.
Other potentially important evidence may include:
Additional surveillance or dash-camera footage
Electronic vehicle data
Tire marks and roadway debris
Vehicle damage and final resting position
Cellphone records when relevant
Roadway and lighting conditions
Witness statements
Mechanical inspection of the vehicle
Investigators may use this evidence to determine the vehicle’s movements and whether another vehicle, roadway condition, mechanical issue, or other circumstance played a role.
A Single-Vehicle Crash Does Not Always Explain Why It Happened
The fact that only one vehicle ultimately crashed does not necessarily answer what caused the driver to lose control.
Depending on the evidence, an investigation may consider whether another vehicle entered the driver’s lane, whether the driver took evasive action, whether a vehicle component failed, or whether another condition contributed to the crash.
In this case, police have not announced a final cause, and the investigation remains ongoing.
