A Dallas police officer was hospitalized Wednesday afternoon after being hit by a passing vehicle during a traffic stop on Marvin D. Love Freeway in Dallas, according to NBC 5 DFW. The crash happened around 3:52 p.m. on July 8, 2026, in the 6200 block of northbound U.S. Highway 67. Dallas police told NBC 5 that the officer was stopped for a traffic stop and was standing outside the patrol vehicle when a passing vehicle struck both the officer and the police vehicle. The officer was taken to the hospital for a precautionary evaluation. The driver of the striking vehicle was also hospitalized, and the conditions of both patients were not immediately known. NBC 5 reported that its helicopter footage showed at least four damaged vehicles at the scene, including a Dallas police SUV, a blue sedan on its side, and two other midsize SUVs being loaded onto a tow truck. Police said the investigation remains ongoing, and it was unclear whether the vehicle originally stopped by police was involved in the crash. Crashes involving stopped emergency vehicles are extremely dangerous because officers, first responders, and motorists may be outside their vehicles with little protection from passing traffic. Drivers approaching a traffic stop, crash scene, or disabled vehicle must pay close attention, reduce speed, and move over when required. Texas drivers should understand that stopped police vehicles and emergency scenes create serious roadway hazards. A moment of distraction, speeding, unsafe lane change, or failure to slow down can cause a devastating collision. When a patrol vehicle is struck during a traffic stop, investigators may review whether the passing driver was distracted, impaired, speeding, following too closely, or failed to move over or slow down. These cases require a careful investigation. Important evidence may include dash camera footage, body camera footage, patrol vehicle camera footage, nearby traffic cameras, witness statements, vehicle damage, cell phone records, event data recorders, police reports, and roadway conditions at the time of the crash. Under Texas law, drivers must move over or slow down for certain stopped emergency vehicles. The purpose of the law is simple: protect police officers, firefighters, EMS personnel, tow truck operators, road workers, and others who may be working near traffic. Anyone injured in a Dallas freeway crash should seek medical attention as soon as possible. Even when a person is initially taken to the hospital for evaluation, symptoms such as neck pain, back pain, headaches, dizziness, shoulder pain, knee pain, radiating pain, numbness, tingling, or concussion symptoms may worsen after the crash.
